Agate – Gemstone Of The Month

AgateOne thing I love about Agate is that it can be found in Texas and I can’t help but be partial to anything that can be found in the Lone Star State.  After all, I live in Katy, Texas…work in the Galleria area in Houston, Texas and grew up in Sugarland, Texas.  These are my peeps.  This is where I do business and buy and sell the most jewelry and diamonds, so I love that Agate can be found all over this state.

I don’t know if you have ever seen Agate, but it such a pretty stone, and the perfect start to the gemstone guide. It has these bands of colors and truly it looks like you are looking at the sunset or a landscape painting.  Stunning and common and relatively inexpensive! It has everything going for it that makes it a winner! [Read more...]

Colored Gemstone Guide – Jonathan’s Diamond Buyer

gemstoneGemstones have been something that I have been fascinated with ever since I went to Tucson to the Gem and Jewelry Show there. I have to admit that I am much more of a novice when it comes to colored gemstones than I am about diamonds. But, like everything else in life, it’s all in the learning, and I am all about learning.

One thing I’ve noticed is that estate and antique jewelry seems to carry quite a bit of different colored gemstones, so it’s important to have a handle on what’s what and to at least be able to recognize the differences in them. If you don’t know the first thing about colored gemstones, then it’s hard to tell an emerald from a tsavorite.

Each month I am going to talk about a different gemstone. I will discuss their properties, how to clean them and take care of them, common treatments that are used on them, so you will be aware if the possibility exists if your stone has been heat treated and what that means. [Read more...]

B is for Better Business Bureau – ABC’s of Jonathan’s Diamond Buyer

ABC's of Jonathan's Diamond BuyerIf you have jewelry that you are looking to sell or even trade, how do you start your search for a diamond buyer or a jewelry buyer? Do you head to the Internet, thumb through the yellow pages, talk to friends? No matter which route you choose to take to find the perfect person who is going buy your precious goods, it is important that you trust that person before you even allow them to take a look at your jewelry or gold.

Why Should You Trust Your Diamond Buyer?

Better Business BureauThere are several reasons you should trust your diamond buyer, but the most important reason is this.

They are going to be writing you a check for your goods.  What recourse do you have if you go straight to the bank and that check is not good? Okay, so say that happens and you go back to your diamond buyer and he’s gone. The storefront is closed down, or wherever you met him is gone – along with your jewelry. Now what? Call the police and the Better Business Bureau.  But, this person never existed.  And, your jewelry is now gone.  Hopefully you had it insured so you can recoup your losses.

Believe it or not, this happens more times than I care to tell you about.  I have heard about it from clients over and over, and it’s a hard lesson to learn. So, how do you protect yourself? [Read more...]

Jewelry Trends Made Famous By Hollywood

Jewelry TrendsI love a good movie and I love good jewelry and I have to admit that I have fallen victim to some of the jewelry trends that have been made famous by Hollywood.  Hollywood has an influence over so many things we do, wear, say and act that it is no surprise that jewelry trends would be among one of the things that they influence as well. Antique Engagement Rings – Go Antique or Go Home

Antique Engagement RingsI love a shiny diamond in a shiny setting that is all blinged out with diamonds and such, but there is something about antique engagement rings that have so much style and substance that I can’t help but wonder why more people don’t go this route when they are buying engagement rings.

First, to be considered an antique, the piece must be at least 100 years old.  Now, you can buy something that is a reproduction, in other words, it was made to look old, but that is not the same as an actual antique.  Think about it…each of these antique engagement rings tells a story.  Wouldn’t it be cool to add your story to the timeline of the story that has already unfolded?
